Hello North Stars,

We hope that you have had a relaxing summer because it is time to begin another learning-filled year. We have much to celebrate from last year and goals to set for 2018-2019. We have a few new members of the staff to help us make this a great learning experience for all.

Last year, our students’ growth moved North out of Learning Improvement. The formula is partly based on Smarter Balanced scores, and attendance, so we’ll continue asking higher level questions and need our students to continue showing grit and be at school on time every day. Our English language learners earned North the title of a Beacon School by showing perseverance with Imagine Learning. Many students met or exceeded their NWEA growth goals in both reading and math.

As great as last year was, we need to keep aiming for the stars. Our teachers will be expecting each child to learn each day and will do whatever it takes to ensure that it happens. As the principal, I too want everyone learning, every day. All MLSD elementary students have an exciting new math curriculum called Ready Math. The standards (what is learned) will be the same, but how we present lessons may be different.

To help all students succeed, North will offer:

  • Rigorous, achievable instruction
  • Power Hour: Mondays 9:15-10:15 and Tues-Friday 8:00-9:00
  • Success Unlimited (Boys & Girls Club) 3:30-5:30 starting the first day of school
  • Quarterly Academic Success Assemblies, Parents Invited!
  • Ambassadors: Peer helpers
  • Structured Recess: teaching students playground behaviors
  • Family events at school

Families can help their child by:

  • Being at school on time each day
  • Communicate with classroom teachers when things are going well and when there are concerns
  • Encourage reading each night
  • Join PTO, come to family events when possible

Thank you for trusting North staff with your child’s learning. We take our commitment to educating our children seriously, and excited to work with you to make this a great year!
